Canada Post’s pay equity team has reviewed thousands of files and continues to make payments to potentially eligible employees.

Current employees

Payments to all active employees identified as eligible have been made.

Former employees

Payments have been made to approximately 12,500 former employees. However, there remains a number of potentially eligible employees for whom we don’t have current contact information. Canada Post has made attempts to locate former employees and/or their estates as follows:

  • In March of 2014, an ad was published in a series of National newspapers;
  • In April 2014 we utilized letter forwarding services offered by the National Search Unit (NSU);
  • In January 2015 we utilized letter forwarding services offered by the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA);
  • In May 2016, the CRA will be conducting another mailing through their letter forwarding services; and
  • In May 2016 another ad will be published in the major National newspapers.

Upon confirming a mailing address for a potentially eligible employee, Canada Post will send the employee an information package containing forms which must be completed by the employee and returned to Canada Post before a payment can be initiated. Payment will be processed upon verification of the information provided by the employee in the forms.

If you believe you may be eligible for a payment, you can submit your mailing address by email or mail to:
Pay Equity Team at Canada Post, 2701 RIVERSIDE DR SUITE B-432, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0B1.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through this complex process.

April 2014

Canada Post has started issuing payments to some employees who are eligible for a pay equity payment. As such, letters from Service Canada are being sent to some current and former Canada Post employees in cases when Canada Post does not have their current data.

If you are questioning the legitimacy of these letters, please be advised that Service Canada is indeed performing this task on our behalf.

If you’re a current or former employee who is likely to be eligible for a payment, you will receive an information package after we have confirmed your address but before you receive your payment. The package contains a letter, booklet and forms that will help you provide the information needed to complete files and move closer to issuing a payment. If you’re a former employee and think that we might not have your current address, please email payequity@canadapost.ca or write to the Pay Equity Team at Canada Post, 2701 RIVERSIDE DR SUITE B-432, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0B1.

While we are pleased to be able to proceed with some initial payments, we are continuing with the complex task of confirming many current and former employees’ eligible service and time records, and contact details. As indicated in previous updates, this process will take time. As addresses and information are finalized and confirmed, we will proceed with payments.

If you feel you may be eligible for a payment, please email payequity@canadapost.ca or write to the Pay Equity Team at Canada Post, 2701 RIVERSIDE DR SUITE B-432, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0B1.

Canada Post’s pay equity team has reviewed thousands of files and continues to make payments to eligible employees.

Current employees

Payment has been made to approximately 2,600 active employees identified as eligible. Current employees who believe they are eligible, but have not yet received a payment, may contact the Pay Equity team at the addresses provided below.

Former employees

Payments to former employees have begun. However, because the majority of people eligible for a payment are former employees, it will take some time for all of these files to be processed and payments made.

As soon as a file has been identified as ready for payment, a letter will be sent to confirm the recipient’s mailing address. By the end of January, approximately 8,000 of these letters will have been sent. Once the mailing address is confirmed, an information package will be sent. The information package contains important forms, which must be completed and returned before a payment to be processed. As individuals return these forms, payments will be processed. Payments to withdrawn individuals will start by the end January.

Canada Post is pleased to have reached a Memorandum of Agreement with the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), in accordance with the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal pay equity ruling confirmed on November 17, 2011 by the Supreme Court of Canada.

This Agreement, consistent with the ruling and requiring the Tribunal’s confirmation, is consistent with other public-sector pay equity agreements and provides the certainty and clarity required to begin proceeding with payments to eligible employees. While the Corporation is facing a difficult financial situation, it takes the payments related to the court ruling seriously. A dedicated team of employees has already been carefully reviewing tens of thousands of individual employee files and records – both paper and electronic – that span decades.

That complex work will continue in order to determine eligibility and apply the Memorandum of Agreement.

The Corporation understands that current and former employees who may be eligible for payment are eager to understand the personal impact of the ruling. Canada Post expects to begin making some payments on August 1, 2013, but given the level of work required to close each file, completing this process will take time. Those former and current employees who are eligible will be notified in writing as the process unfolds.

Canada Post will continue to update the dedicated website at www.canadapostpayequity.ca.

We understand that employees and retirees who may be eligible for pay equity compensation payments are interested in knowing when they can expect payment. This is a fair question.

A dedicated team of 60 employees has been working through the complex data gathering and review process required to be in a position to make payments. This work involves reviewing tens of thousands of individual employee files – both paper and electronic – that span decades. It’s an enormous task, but we are making progress.

Recently, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) has released letters suggesting the Corporation is holding up the process. This is unfortunate and likely frustrating to anyone following this process closely. In our meetings with the PSAC, it has always been clear that, despite our best efforts, we would not be in a position to release payments at this stage in the process.

To make payments, we need two things: a thorough review of the employee data to determine eligibility, and, as required by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, an agreement with the PSAC that provides certainty and finality on all issues. While Canada Post continues to move forward on the data portion, the effort to reach an agreement has unfortunately stalled, with the PSAC launching legal proceedings that only cause delay in the process and create further uncertainty. For more information, you can read the recent letters between the PSAC and Canada Post below.

Canada Post remains committed to applying the pay equity ruling as efficiently as possible. We will continue the massive job of gathering and reviewing data, while attempting to reach an agreement with the PSAC to process payments in a timely manner.
